Deadline: December 1, 2025
Description
The Shorenstein Postdoctoral Fellowship on Contemporary Asia, offered through Stanford’s Walter H. Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center (APARC), supports two junior scholars each year. Fellows spend a full 10-month term in residence, conducting original research and writing on political, economic, and social transformations in Asia. They become part of Stanford’s intellectual community, engage with Center events, and contribute to publications and seminars around the Asia-Pacific region.
Eligibility
To be eligible, applicants must hold a PhD no more than three years prior to the fellowship start. Their dissertation must be completed or near completion, with official degree conferral no later than June 30 before the fellowship begins. They must propose a research agenda focused on Asia (e.g. Northeast, Southeast, South Asia) or Asia-Pacific international relations, political economy, or social change. Full residence at Stanford for the fellowship term is required.
Benefits
Accepted fellows receive an annual scale-based salary (pro-rated for the 10-month term) aligned with Stanford policy, along with up to USD 3,000 for research expenses. They also gain institutional support such as office and academic resources, enriched networking within APARC, opportunities to present in seminars, and the chance to publish in affiliated journals.
How to apply
Applicants must fill out the Stanford application form along with supporting materials: a detailed research statement (up to 5 pages), a curriculum vitae, and three letters of recommendation. Submissions must be made by December 1, 2025, by 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time. Letters should be sent in PDF form to the fellowship coordination email.
