The Local News Accelerator 2025, led by the International Press Institute (IPI), offers a transformative opportunity for local and niche media outlets striving to innovate and sustain themselves in an increasingly complex digital landscape. Now in its third edition, the programme is designed to strengthen local journalism by equipping media organizations with strategic, editorial, and business development skills. Over four months, selected newsrooms will receive tailored support to tackle their core operational and editorial challenges, while accessing an international cohort of peers, industry experts, and IPI’s innovation ecosystem. The Accelerator is more than a training—it’s a journey of rethinking local journalism through technology, storytelling, and community impact.
Eligibility
To apply, organizations must be legally registered and operate as media outlets with a clear local focus. They should be producing original journalism that serves the information needs of their communities and adhere to ethical journalism standards and press freedom principles. Teams must include at least two people who can commit a minimum of four hours per week over the accelerator’s duration. Applicants should already understand their audience and demonstrate readiness to explore new tools, technologies, or business models. A proposal outlining a specific challenge and solution is also required, though the project can evolve during the program.
